Only a little snack…. I have been busy just trying to you know pay bills, live life, get my kids to bed on time, I even had one of those vintage illnesses called the stomach bug, yep that is still around.
Anyway, here is a little taste from one of my favorite patterns— the polka dot. Minnie Mouse might have made this pattern more childish but Princess Di for sure helped it look chic.
A good rule of thumb when picking out which dot to buy— also consider the coloring. Not all dots are created equal. In order to avoid looking like a clown stick to the neutrals. Black dots, white dots, cream dots or tonal dots. If you find great color in a polka dot pattern make sure the dot itself is either in a neutral or tonal color.
When styling with dots don’t be afraid to mix other dots or patterns into the mix. Dots on dots can look great together. To avoid looking insane consider a few things. Scale is always important. A large dot pattern looks great with a smaller dot pattern. Polka dots also look great with a stripe. When mixing patterns try and stick to the same color story. For a bold statement try pairing two complementary polka dots but in opposite colors. Like a blue dot with white ground paired with a white dot with blue ground.
If the dot on dot look is too much for you, polka dots look great with all the basics in your closet. If polka clothing is a just a flat out no dot no, you can easily embrace this pattern in socks, hosiery, belts, bags, scarfs and shoes. So many brands at lots of price points carry this pattern in endless categories, making it easy to wear in all seasons.
Here are a few of my favorite dots.
