It’s Laundry Day and nobody should have to wear this type of head gear.
Your face is getting all the attention— masks, masks, masks. Let’s give some love to something all your hair follicles can get excited about.
Is it Playboy? Is it Halloween? I don’t care. I am too old to not allow myself to feel sexy and or silly for myself. I bought these ears years ago at this sweet store in NY that no longer exists. I bought them because they were so beautifully made and playful, yet they sat in my drawer for years because I deemed them impractical. No more. So, maybe I wore these at school drop off because my son thought I looked magical, maybe I wore these with sweats while I cleaned the house. Life is short, get bunny ears. If you dare to ear… I personally like a clean hair and makeup look with these show stoppers and something sleek and simple.
The infamous pearl finds its way to your head. I love these oversized pearls paired with denim or a white tee or a simple sweater. I usually go with a center part or slightly messy hair when wearing this headband. Due to its natural fussiness it feels more approachable when the rest of me is slightly out of place. Me in a nut shell… slightly out of place.
I don’t speak French but I like French wine, French people and French kissing so I can wear whatever beret I please, thank you beaucoup. To be fair, this is a more of pillbox. It has an elastic string to keep it secure, like I am a child who might lose it, but honestly I probably would. I got this hard dome for my head on Amazon, I wear it all the time, it comes in a ton of colors and I have about four of them. I feel cool even when I am wearing sweats and coffee spilled down my jacket. It also suits my extremely small head. You know those characters in Beetlejuice, yeah that’s me but with a beret.
The classic bobby pin. Back in the day before these were offered in a million iterations I would spray paint the black ones with neon paint for photoshoots or create patterns using white out. Thankfully I can just buy them now. So many companies now offer their take on this classic hair pin and the options are endless. Layer all the simple ones or add a few novelty ones in the mix.
For extra credit take your bobby pin, cross them over each other to make an x and add it as a broach on your collar using the button hole to hold it in place. Or use this one from Madewell for the same look (above).
Do you sense a theme? I am no longer apologizing for dressing up, being overdressed, underdressed, wearing something silly, impractical or what some may consider weird. So should you. I won‘t yuck your yum, I just want you to embrace all the things you love from afar but think you can’t, you can… ok?
I love, love, love this hat and I know it isn’t practical or for everyone but if you do want to lean into this vibe there are plenty out there that are not as over the top as some you may have seen during Royal wedding season. I do believe that these artisans are a rare breed and to display their art on your head is both daring, boldly beautiful and unique. I love pairing my hat with a t-shirt or a more pared down look so that the hat stands on its own.
Maybe similar to the above but this is a classic, more subtle pillbox. I love these hats in a stripe, navy, black, neutral or sequin. These pillboxes fit the head so elegantly and can be worn on the side in a jaunty tilt or towards the back of your head.
I am no cowgirl or Indiana Jones and these hats are sometimes hard for me to pull off, but that doesn’t stop me from finding my perfect style. I love finding vintage versions of these rancher style hats, ones that show the worn leather and stains from their journey with other owners. For those more into a new hat, I do love how designers have reimagined these classically male hats, with so many different brim widths, ribbons, colors and crown shapes to fit more people’s noggins and style. If you have a small head like me, try using hat tape inside to make your small head fit more snugly.
If you watched Stylish with Jenna Lyons, you may remember associate Justin Thompson mentioning hat blocking, a technique that milliners use to re-form a hat that has lost its shape or needs a little maintenance. Most specialty hat stores can help you hat block if the hat store you purchased from can’t help with repair, or you can make a special trip to the The Hat House in NYC.
Some people say I am a literal angel, actually nobody says that. Here are some headbands with more guts than the average. Angel or not, I love them and so does every four year-old girl I meet. Again, I always like to find a balance between fancy, tom-boy and hi-low. So for me, an over the top headband is better paired with something more simple, subtle and less precious.
I love a baseball hat. Maybe it’s my years of playing sports or an easy way to show my support for my San Francisco Giants while I am in NY. Regardless, I an drawn to them. Surprise, surprise, I like pairing a baseball hat with an outfit that maybe you wouldn’t think to pair it with. Want to wear a big dress or shirt to brunch or the farmers market, great, get a baseball hat. There is something sexy about a woman who takes a traditionally male item like a hat or suit and makes it her own and I am all for us women taking it all and making it sexy on our own terms.
Some additional head gear I like, maybe you will too!
As always, feel free to send me questions, concerns or photos of your haul to sarahsdirtylaundry@gmail.com

Obsessed with your vision on fashion. Thank goodness I found you.❤️
Hey, Sarah! I love your dirty laundry, too. How would you style hats with eyeglasses? I always feel like I have too many things on my head when I wear a hat and glasses. Any suggestions?
