In 1930 Minnie Mouse debuted the now iconic red and white polka dot dress with matching bow. Minnie has had many looks since, but nothing as identifiable as those classic dots. I just went to Disneyland with my kiddos and family, I haven’t been to Disney probably since I was 6. Excited does not begin to express how I felt going to the Happiest Place on Earth. I was over the moon and smiling at every turn. As a freelancer I never take time off from work. As a single mom with no financial support, I work like every job will be my last. This has and likely will always been my mindset and my work ethic no matter what my finical status is. Freelancers often learn to become comfortable with the unknown of when work will come and understand that everyday you don’t work you don’t make money. So, taking off a full 8 days to be with my kids and my family, many of those who I don’t see as often as I would like, and not jamming a job into the middle of it, was both needed and rare for me. So yes, I was thrilled and grateful to ignore the emails and calls and lean into all that Disneyland had to offer. My littlest one was tall enough for all the rides so all the kids and most of the adults clocked close to 18,000 steps and we hit every ride we could until we all almost fell over. We laughed, screamed, smiled till our faces hurt and cried happy tears. I wore my best polka-dot blazer in support for the one and only Minnie Mouse. Here’s the thing, I was going to be happy no matter what I wore, but leaning into somewhat of a costume that day made it a little more fun, even if it embarrassed my kids at first. That’s the point of all these clothes you can buy, feeling good and having fun. At one point after the 10th person or staff member and even Minnie herself, had complimented my look, my daughter turned to me and said how much she loved that I wore that Minnie top.
Here are a few Minnie inspired polka-dots for your next Disney trip or Disney movie or whenever your happy place is.
