Summer is busy. You’re busy, I’m busy and summer cocktails at 5 make it hard for me to write more substacks, please forgive me. But, I am here and giving as much as this 40 year old can give covered in sweaty sunscreen and in bed before my 9pm bedtime. So today it is simple, I love eyelet and I want to share with you the ones I love, yep that simple. This feminine and sweet fabric looks elegant for adults, cute for kids and just adorable for babies. The “buttonhole stitch” fabric that screams summer more than any other fabric dates back to the 16th century from either Scotland or the Czech Republic, it is debated which country used the fabric first. The story goes that an Italian fabric maker discovered the eyelet fabric and brought it to his home country claiming it was a stronger fabric than the frequently used bone lace and it quickly became loved by designers and counties globally. Thankfully for us hole loving customers, most every designer or brand, no matter the price point offers eyelet in some form in their spring or summer line.
Next to seersucker, nothing says warmer weather is here or coming more than eyelet. The beauty of eyelet is that it is both causal for weekend and beach getaways and elegant for summer events or nights out. Yes, this fabric may feel like more spring/summer but the detail in the fabric continues to looks great during the transition seasons. Paired with leather, suede or dark denim, eyelet remains chic. A thin tight turtleneck underneath your favorite eyelet blouse highlights the best of this decorative fabric.
So, happy summer, throw on your eyelet dress with sandals, pair your open shirt with swim or use an eyelet jacket for work and enjoy the natural breeze from this fabric with holes, check out some of my favorites below.
